Indian compound archers were delighted to win three golds and a bronze at the Asian Archery Championships on Thursday. Parneet Kaur beat her more accomplished compatriot Jyoti Surekha Vennam to win the women’s individual event title, while the women’s team and mixed team also won gold medals.

The day began with the Indian women’s compound team of Jyoti, Aditi Gopichand Swamy and Parneet beating their Chinese Taipei opponents 234-233 to win the Asian Championship. The win meant the Indian trio added another feather to their caps: they are now world champions, Asian Games champions and Asian Championship gold medallists.

World champion Aditi came back within minutes as she teamed up with U21 world champion Priyansh to defeat their Thai counterparts 156-151 and win gold in the compound mixed final. It was Aditi’s second gold medal at the Asian Championships…within hours.

This was followed by an all-India women’s compound individual final between Jyoti and Parneet which went right down to the wire. The two were tied on 145 points and a shoot-off ensued, where Parneet edged Jyoti 9-8 to win the gold medal. Abhishek Verma added another medal to India’s tally by defeating South Korea’s Joo Jahun 147-146 to win bronze in the men’s individual compound event.

The Indian men’s compound team won the bronze on Wednesday. The trio of Abhishek, Prothomesh Phuge and Priyansh defeated Chinese Taipei 29-28 in a shoot-off, after a 235-235 tie, to open India’s tally at the championships.

Recurve is no Olympic quote

Although India’s compound did well, there was no Olympic citation as compound archery is not part of the Olympic programme. Recurve archery, however, is part of the Olympics and the Indians could not take up any quotation on the offer.

None of the Indian recurve archers made it to the finals across the disciplines and for the third time after the World Championships and Asian Games earlier this year archers missed out on securing quota places. The next qualifying event will be the third World Cup in June 2024. Thereafter, any places awarded in the world rankings will use the list issued on June 24, 2024.
