Hugo Boumous’ second-half strike led the Mohun Bagan Super giants to a 1-0 win over nine-man Bengaluru FC in their Indian Super League (ISL 2023-23) clash at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The home team didn’t get off to the best start and their defense was all over the place. Bengaluru’s Roshan Singh capitalized in the seventh minute when he darted into space near the opposition box, but his shot failed to trouble goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

Juan Fernando’s men finally found their rhythm and began to stitch passes together to create attacking moves. Liston was just shy of Colaco’s goal, but his long-range effort was wide of the target.

Bengaluru had a few chances but their finishing left a lot to be desired. This was seen in the 49th minute when Rohit Kumar moved into space in the attacking third and had a crack at goal, but his effort was a routine save for Keith.

The home side began to take control within the last half hour. The foreign duo of Jason Cummings and Baumas came to their side’s rescue with the former picking up a loose ball and squaring the French-Moroccan’s pass. Baumas calmly slotted past Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to give his side the lead.

The visiting side couldn’t hold their form after that and were in all sorts of trouble when Suresh Singh Wangjam was sent off for a second yellow card in the 75th minute. Dimitri Petratos was about to launch a potential goal-scoring move but Suresh brought down the striker and was subsequently shown a red card.

It got worse for Bengaluru Petratos as they made another run in injury time and brought down Roshan, who also received his marching orders. With only Gurpreet between the Australian striker and the goal, Roshan resorted to fouling Petratos and the referee had no choice but to red card him. The home team maintained their lead to win all three points.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant Mariners will face Chennaiyin FC in an away game on the 7th, after which they will face Maziah in the AFC Cup. Bengaluru FC will play their first home game of the season when they host East Bengal FC on 4 October.
