Barcelona’s Gavi suffers ACL injury in Spain qualifier – sources

Barcelona midfielder Gavi is set for a long spell after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Spain’s 3-1 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Georgia on Sunday, sources have told ESPN.

A spokesman for the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed they had already sent the diagnosis to Barca, who will carry out their own tests on Gavi’s right knee on Monday.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made nine changes La Rosa Gavi is one of only two players with Real Sociedad, the team that beat Cyprus last Friday. Robin Le NormandKeep them in place.

However, he was forced off midway through the first half after landing awkwardly while handling the ball following a collision with Georgia. Luka Lochoshviliwhich was not related to injury.

Gavi, 19, managed to get off the pitch with Spain’s medical staff, but the expression on his face suggested he feared the worst.

“It looks like a serious injury,” De La Fuente told reporters after the game. “He’s really worried. It’s the bitterest victory of my life.

“We are waiting for the final test. He will now go to Barcelona [Spain sporting director] Albert Luke for further testing. We are destroyed. Looks like we lost the game.”

He added: “Gavi is broken, devastated… He didn’t think these things could happen to him. When they haven’t happened to you before, you can think you’re not weak, but we’re very fragile. Of course. He’s sorry, We are all broken.

“Yes, the hardest day of this game for me, the most bitter.”

Spain’s players also seemed aware of the extent of the injury, with Barca teammate Ferran Torres celebrating his goal, which made it 2-1, keeping Gavi’s tally. 9 shirts.

“It was an important win to finish the qualifiers well, but it’s a bittersweet feeling because of Gavi’s injury,” Torres said.

“Hopefully he recovers as soon as possible. We don’t know the extent of the injury, we’ll have to see in the coming days, but knowing Gavi, what a fighter he is, we think it could be serious.”

Gavi has been a regular for Barca and Spain this season, missing just two matches for his club through suspension.

But de la Fuente denied suggestions that Gavi was injured as a result of playing too many games.

“It’s an accident, it’s bad luck. It has nothing to do with game submissions,” he said.

“He was in perfect condition. He didn’t play before the international break because he was suspended. He was fresh and in great form. There were no problems.”

Gavi’s importance to Xavi Hernandez’s Spanish champions has increased due to long-term injuries to Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, with the coach calling him “the heart and soul of the team”.

Pedri returned to action just before the international break after two months out, while De Jong is in line to make his return against Rayo Vallecano this weekend.

Barca then face FC Porto, Atletico Madrid and surprise La Liga leaders Girona at home in three potentially season-defining games.

Spain had already booked their place at next summer’s Euro 2024 finals in Germany ahead of Sunday’s match against Georgia, but still ended their qualification campaign with victory at Valladolid’s Jose Zorrilla Stadium.

Le Normand put them ahead in the fourth minute for Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratselia to equalize for the visitors after just six minutes.

Torres restored Spain’s lead on 55 minutes and Lochoshvili completed the scoring with less than 20 minutes remaining, heading home youngster Lamine Yamal’s cross into his own net.
