Match Preview – India vs Sri Lanka, ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 2023, 33rd Match

Big picture: two teams with opposite fortunes

India. Sri Lanka. At Wankhede. The last time these two teams played an ODI at this venue was on that occasion 2011 World Cup Final. Twelve years later, however, things are a little different.

India lived up to its billing of being the pre-tournament favourites. They have won all their six matches so far despite missing Shubman Gill in their first two and Hardik Pandya in their last two. They will become the first team to reach the semi-finals if they beat Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Having qualified for this World Cup via the qualifier route, Sri Lanka are fighting for survival. They have just four points from six matches and are coming off a loss to Afghanistan. Another defeat would push them to the brink of elimination.

India will be without Hardik again India is unlikely to return before the last league match, against the Netherlands. That means they can once again field just five frontline bowlers, starting at tail no. 8.

Sri Lanka have also lost several players to injuries, including their designated captain Dasun Shanaka. Kushal Mendis took the reins in his absence but it seems to have affected his batting. In the first two matches, when Shanaka was captain, Mendis scored 198 runs at a strike rate of 166.38. Since then, he has managed just 70 in four innings at a strike rate of 76.08.

Can he find his mojo and inspire his side to a much-needed win? Because it’s not just the semi-final spot that’s at stake Champions Trophy 2025 qualification.

In the spotlight: Shreyas Iyer and Angelo Mathews

Shreyas Iyer Came into this World Cup as India’s first choice number. 4, and has scored 134 runs in six innings so far at an average of 33.50. Those aren’t bad numbers but such is the competition in this Indian team that they don’t guarantee anything. That he fell short – an old weakness – doesn’t help in the previous two matches either. He needs a big score in the next two matches, otherwise India might consider dropping Hardik if he returns.

Angelo Matthews India was not supposed to be in this World Cup. But now that he is here, Sri Lanka should make the best use of his abilities – batting him at number one. 7 is not the way to go. Matthews has one Great record against India: 53.57 average and 84.93 strike rate, all three of his ODI centuries against them. Considering the games inside IndiaThat average nearly doubles to 105.16 and the strike rate swells to 96.77.

“I think it’s a ground where things can be unpredictable at times, as there’s a lot on it for the bowlers as well. So you’re likely to see a top spell from the bowlers, pushing the opposition, that can happen. A high-scoring ground, But at the same time, if the bowlers keep the ball in the right place, it can be a bit difficult.”
Rohit Sharma Wankhede pitch

“Thankfully we have some people who are in form. I mean Kusal.” [Mendis] Played some super knocks here, Sadira mr. Compatible, as Pathum has [Nissanka] At the top of the order.”
