Northeast United FC produced a commanding performance to beat Chennaiyin FC 3-0 in an Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24) match at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Center in Guwahati on Friday. While Northeast United FC picked up their first win of the season, Chennaiyin FC slipped to their second consecutive defeat after losing their season-opener to Odisha FC.
Northeast United’s trio of Indian goalscorers Parthiv Gogoi, Falguni Singh and Ashir Akhtar helped them to a resounding win. The home side took the lead in the 42nd minute when Gogoi drilled a superb right-footed strike from outside the box straight into the top right corner. He had the best assist from Romain Filipoteux. Northeast doubled their lead three minutes into the second half after a superb solo run found Nestor Albiach on the wing after a defence-splitting pass from Michel Zabako. With the ball at his feet, Albiach delivered an inch-perfect pass to an uncovered Falguni, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.
The pressure of being two goals down began to show on Chennai FC as coach Wayne Coyle was forced to make two substitutions immediately after Falguni’s goal. Farooq Chowdhury and Lazar Sirkovic have replaced Irfan Yadwad and Ryan Edwards respectively. More changes were made by Coyle just after hour-mark Alexander Romario Jesuraj and Ayush Adhikari were moved to bring in Ankit Mukherjee and Jiteshwar Singh. Despite the changes, Chennaiyin failed to create chances.
Chennai’s best chance to score in the second half came when Ninthoinganba Mitei used his pace to beat the Northeast backline, but Mirshad Michu did well to block the shot. The hosts held on to their lead before putting the tie to bed in extra time when Akhtar scored his side’s third goal.
Northeast United next face Punjab FC on October 6, and Chennaiyin FC face Mohun Bagan Super Giants on October 7.
