Sources – Cardinals’ Kyler Murray won’t come off PUP when eligible

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray He is not expected to come off the physically unable to perform list when he becomes eligible on Monday and is still believed to be weeks away from playing, league sources told ESPN.

Murray has not practiced since tearing his right ACL in December against the New England Patriots. Former no. 1 overall draft pick and plans to return this season, but he is slowly ramping up his return in an effort to rejoin the Cardinals, sources told ESPN.

“It doesn’t feel right [Murray’s return] Forthcoming,” a Cardinal source said.

The rules governing activation from the PUP list make it plausible that it will be late October, before Murray returns to action.

After a player misses four games on the PUP list, his team has five weeks in which to allow the injured player to begin practicing. Once a player begins practicing, teams have three weeks to decide whether to activate him on the 53-man roster.

If the player does not return to practice or does not return but is not healthy enough to rejoin the active roster at the end of that period, he must remain on the PUP list for the entire season. For now, Murray wants to return — sources say he likes the team’s direction and offense, as well as the energy that new head coach Jonathan Gannon has brought — but he’s still recovering and needs to start practicing.

The Cardinals are hopeful without Murray Joshua Dobbs, who they acquired shortly before the start of the season in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Dobbs brings a belief and energy to the Cardinals that has kept them in every game and put them in position to upset the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Dobbs has yet to throw an interception while providing valuable leadership.

But if Murray is ready, Dobbs’ time as the Cardinals’ starter will be over.

Gannon indicated earlier this month that the Cardinals would be cautious about Murray’s return, saying he was “in no rush” to activate the Heisman Trophy winner as soon as he became eligible.

“[We would] Would love to take him there,” Gannon said on Sept. 22.
