Vinícius Júnior praises Sevilla for ejecting fan for racial abuse

Vinicius Jr praised Sevilla for acting quickly and reporting a fan to the authorities after the club ejected the Real Madrid forward for racially abusing him during Saturday’s 1-1 La Liga draw.

A man makes a racist gesture towards Vinicius after the Brazil international clashed with Sevilla players in the 86th minute at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Vinicius has repeatedly been targeted with racial slurs from opposition fans and earlier this month gave evidence at the trial of three Valencia fans accused of racially abusing him during a game in May.

Sevilla announced shortly after Saturday’s match that “a member of the public was identified, ejected from the stadium and handed over to legal authorities” after the club detected “xenophobic and racist behaviour”.

“The individual will also be subject to the club’s stringent internal disciplinary protocol and their membership will be revoked,” Sevilla gave this information in a statement.

“Sevilla FC condemns all racist and xenophobic behavior and will work closely with the authorities to ensure action is taken accordingly. This behavior does not belong to Sevilla FC.”

Later on Saturday, Vinicius responded to the incident on social media.

The player also said he saw a video — which his representatives shared with ESPN — that showed another young fan racially abusing him.

“Congratulations to Sevilla for their swift action and penalty in another sad episode for Spanish football,” Vinicius said.

“Unfortunately I have access to the video of another racist act at this Saturday’s game, this time by a child. It is very sad that there is no one to educate him. I invest and I invest a lot in education in Brazil. Training citizens with different attitudes.

“The face of today’s racist is revealed on the website like any other show,” he said. “I hope the Spanish authorities will do their part and change the law once and for all. These people also need to be criminally punished.

It will be a great first step in preparation for the 2030 World Cup [that Spain will co-host]. I’m here to help. Sorry for the repetitive words but this is episode number 19. And counting.”

La Liga documented and reported eight incidents of racist abuse targeting Vinicius during the 2022-23 season, including one at Mestalla.

However, in several cases, local prosecutors have decided not to press charges

“Racist or hateful behavior has no place in sports,” the league posted on social media Saturday. “LaLiga strongly condemns any act of racism and will continue to work to eradicate this inexcusable behavior from our game.”
