What short-ball trouble, asks Shreyas after powering India into semi-finals

Shreyas Iyer “No problem” with fast bowlers targeting him with short deliveries. The India batsman insisted as he realized that there were weaknesses in his game.

“When you say it’s a problem for me, what do you mean?” He started at the post-match press conference Scored 82 off 56 balls to help beat Sri Lanka And sealed India’s passage to the World Cup semi-finals. “Did you see how many pool shots I hit, especially which ones went for four?”

That is true. According to ESPNcricinfo’s log, Shreyas has a better strike rate against the short ball – 135.44. And nearly 20% of the fours (34 out of 191) in his ODI career have come from short balls. Thing is, he averages 21.40 against short lengths, which means he’s getting out a lot in the process of playing these big shots.

Shreyas argues, however, that this is life as a batter. “You know if you try to hit a ball, you’re bound to get out whether it’s a short ball or an overpitch. If I’m bowled two or three times, you’ll all say he can’t play inswinging, he can play if the ball is seaming. No. You made it up neighborhood [feeling] Outside of that he can’t play a short ball, and I feel like people are constantly picking it up and it plays in your mind constantly and you keep working on it.

“Coming from Mumbai, especially from Wankhede, where the bounce is pretty even and you know it bounces a lot more than any other pitch. I’ve played most of my games here. So I know how to handle it. When I go to hit some shots You’re bound to be out and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Most of the time it didn’t work for me, maybe that’s why you think it’s a problem for me, but I don’t have a problem I know.”

The teams are trying to bounce Shreyas. In this World Cup, he faced 107 balls from the quicks and 51 of them were short or less than good length. He scored 60 runs off those 51 deliveries, hitting seven fours and a six and was dismissed twice.

Shreyas said, “There is a lot of talk in the media, which you all do. “But I am confident in my game and myself, and I am serious enough to play certain deliveries. I may get out now and then, but I don’t mind, to be honest. As long as I believe in myself and my team. “Teammates are confident in me. . They support me, and that’s what’s important, that’s what motivates me.”

There was one other thing that rubbed him the wrong way. Shreyas came into this match with a fifty from his last six innings. He started the World Cup with a duck. He also missed out after setting 19 against Bangladesh and 33 against New Zealand – twice.

“It was playing in my head from the start. I was starting great in the first few games but I couldn’t capitalize. Today I told myself it’s in my area, I’m just going to take it. Bull by the horns and luckily it worked out for me. I hope It will continue to work for me in the future because the team is in a great place right now and the players are nurturing each other’s performances and that’s very important when “you’re on such a big stage.”

Shreyas came close to his century after coming out to bat in just the 30th over. With 16 balls left in the innings Dilshan Madushanka sneaked the ball out of his reach and gave him a catch to cover.

“It’s a stage where you play for the team. You don’t play for your individual performance. We definitely discuss about missing a century or a half-century. But go ahead and say, if we were put in the same situation, I’d tackle the bowlers. Had to. Had I batted in the 47th or 48th over, I wouldn’t have thought of a century. I was seeing the ball pretty well. It’s just that I missed that particular ball. A bit off my body and Madhushanka was bowling brilliantly, bowling the new ball. was doing and he changed his pace with the old ball, he bowled smart. Talking about our performance, we will definitely discuss it. A few balls here and there “I could have scored a century. Still a few more matches to go. I hope I can do one.”

Shreyas raced against the clock to recover from a back injury and play in this World Cup. He has now made a match-winning contribution that sealed India’s progress to the semi-finals. Looking back on the year he did, he felt some truth.

“I was eager to return to the team and it was a difficult situation to watch all my teammates play. I am grateful for where I am and I want to thank myself for working hard here with the team. I know the grinding and preparation I went through.

“It was a tough time coming out of the injury, especially when it came to fielding. I couldn’t move like I used to. But the coaches and physios worked really hard on me to recover after the game. Because 50-overs takes a lot of toll on your body. Once you get used to it as an athlete, you focus more on recovery. It’s important for me, especially these days when I’m playing consecutive matches, how I go back to the dressing room after a match, how I train, all these aspects are critical. . I tick the boxes in preparation and make sure that when I come into the game, I’m 100%.”
